What is Insurance?
The text book definition of Insurance is defined as a contract between a company (insurer) and a policyholder, in which a policyholder receives financial protection or reimbursement against losses from an insurance company. But, for us regular people, what does that mean? Let's make it simple: You pay a premium (usually monthly but could be paid quarterly or annually) and the insurer agrees to make you whole in the event of loss. Health Insurance example: Mrs. Smith has XYZ Health insurance, which she pays her premium every month. Mrs. Smith falls ill and has to stay in the hospital, because she has an active policy the insurer pays the bill, less Mrs. Smith's obligation based on her policy. Life Insurance Example: Mr. Jones took out a 30 year Term Life Insurance Policy for $350,000 20 years ago when he was in his early 30's. Mr Jones paid his premium faithfully every month for the past 20 years. Unfortunately Mr. Jones passed away suddenly. The Insurer paid Mrs Jones (Mr Jones's beneficiary) $350,000 to cover the financial loss as a result of Mr Jones death. To sum it all up Insurance is protect against loss.
Who Needs Health Insurance?
Everyone seems like a natural answer to the question, however it is an incomplete answer. We like to instead say, anyone who can't afford to be ill financially. If you are in a financial situation where a trip to the hospital or having your necessary preventative check-ups won't break the bank, then you may not need Health Insurance in the traditional form, and may instead be Self-Insured. The rest of us will need insurance to protect us when having our check-ups, and in the event illness knocks on our door.
